About
Who we are and why we do it
Llandrindod Foodbank is a vital local charity dedicated to tackling hunger and supporting individuals and families in crisis across Llandrindod Wells and the surrounding areas. Founded on Christian principles, we bring together local churches, community groups, agencies, and volunteers in a shared mission: to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry or feels forgotten.
Our journey began as a small independent foodbank, set up by local people responding to visible need. As demand quickly outgrew our initial capacity, we joined the Trussell Trust network in 2013. This enabled us to draw on their expertise, expand our reach, and offer more structured support to those facing food poverty. In 2017, we became a fully independent registered charity—Llandrindod Foodbank—while proudly remaining part of the Trussell Trust family.
Our foundation is simple: no one should have to choose between eating and paying the rent. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen—today and into the future.
More Than Food: A Holistic, Compassionate Response
While emergency food parcels remain a core part of our service, our mission has evolved. We know that food poverty is rarely a standalone issue—it is often the result of wider financial insecurity, housing instability, benefit delays, or poor mental health. That’s why we are developing Oasis, our new community hub on Spa Road (LD1 5ER), into more than just a foodbank.
Oasis was generously gifted to us by a local benefactor, and thanks to ongoing fundraising and volunteer effort, we are transforming it into a welcoming, multi-use support centre. Our goal is not just to offer a “hand out,” but a “hand up”—supporting people with dignity, listening without judgment, and helping them take steps toward stability and independence.
Current Services and Impact
We currently operate three days a week:
Tuesdays and Fridays: 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Wednesdays: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
We provide:
Emergency food parcels, available via referral from over 50 local frontline agencies.
Advice and support services, which help address the root causes of food poverty and financial distress:
Pobl – In-house support every Tuesday with benefits, housing applications, and advocacy.
Private Housing Support (PCC) – Help for tenants dealing with landlord issues, disrepair, or understanding their housing rights and supporting clients in accessing or maintaining secure, long-term housing.
Money Advice Specialist – Budgeting help, debt support, benefit queries, and financial planning.
Energy Advisor – Guidance on managing energy bills, switching suppliers, and accessing fuel support.
Citizens Advice – Face-to-face appointments every Friday (essential since their local office closure).
Age Cymru – Advice and signposting specifically for older residents.
By offering these services under one roof, we aim to make accessing help easier, more dignified, and more effective. Clients are not passed from place to place—they are welcomed, listened to, and supported holistically.
Expanding to Meet Wider Needs
We recognise that crisis support needs to be flexible and responsive. That’s why, as part of our vision for Oasis, we have already expanded beyond food to provide:
Shower and laundry facilities, available by referral, for those without access to basic amenities—often due to homelessness, sofa-surfing, or fuel poverty.
A monthly Drop-in for ex-Service personnel, run in partnership with Help for Heroes. This informal, supportive space offers a listening ear and connection for local veterans, many of whom experience isolation or have complex support needs.
These services reflect our belief that hunger is a symptom of wider disadvantage—and that compassionate, person-centred support can change lives.
Our Future: Building a Resilient Community
We are ambitious for the future of Oasis. We want to grow beyond crisis intervention into early intervention and long-term support. With the right investment, we can expand our offer to include:
Debt counselling and one-to-one budgeting sessions.
Mental health and wellbeing support, including drop-ins and referrals.
Employment advice, including CV support and job coaching.
But to deliver on this vision, we urgently need further funding. Your support would enable us to:
Complete essential renovations to make Oasis a warm, safe, and fully accessible community facility.
Recruit and train more volunteers, so we can support more clients, more often.
Build stronger partnerships with local agencies, creating a truly joined-up service.
Meet rising demand, which shows no sign of slowing amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Why We Matter
Behind every food parcel is a human story—of illness, bereavement, redundancy, family breakdown, or unexpected financial shock. Llandrindod Foodbank exists to stand in the gap: not only by preventing hunger, but by offering dignity, support, and hope.
We are proud to be part of this community—and to be trusted by the people we serve. We believe in walking alongside people through their darkest days and helping them rediscover confidence, control, and community.
With your support, we can ensure that no one in Llandrindod Wells ever has to face crisis alone.
